Teaching and mentoring
From 2020 to 2025 I lectured in Environmental Non-Fiction and Research for Writers at Lancaster University, where I also tutored on the MA in Creative Writing. I’ve taught nature writing at Arvon and the Scottish Writers Centre at Moniack Mhor with Mark Cocker, and have lectured and taught online for The Society of Authors.
Each year I take on a small number of private mentees; please drop me a line via the contact form if you would like to discuss mentoring.
"I worked with Karen when I reached a dead end with a body of work I’d developed as part of a PhD. She had great empathy for what I was trying to achieve and homed in on areas for improvement, suggesting fresh ways I might approach a project I had almost abandoned. Any writer working with Karen should expect pointed and truthful feedback that is never sugar coated but always insightful, and born of many years of experience writing and publishing books in a crowded market and a highly competitive industry. If you’re serious about elevating your work, you will benefit hugely from Karen’s laser-sharp focus."
