Karen Lloyd is a contemporary artist living on the edge of the Lake District, working from her garden studio.
Recently Karen has been working on narrative and still life paintings. She spends a lot of time making drawings from life and outdoors. In March Karen spent a week at The Creative Retreat in Banffshire, developing drawings and paintings.
Karen undertakes projects and residencies in schools (see schools pdf) as well as adult tuition - art groups, individual and small groups by arrangement.
About her work
“Currently I am looking at my work in a new way. I am trying to pair everything down to a simpler form, which means looking anew at familiar objects and places'.
'I am influenced by painters whose work is narrative and frequently naive, for example Mary Newcomb and her idiosyncratic view of the natural world, or Winifred Nicholson's simple paintings incorporating near and far away - glimpses of landscape seen from the window sill'.
“I paint in a variety of media including oils and acrylics. I like the differing qualities of contrasting surfaces such as canvas and artists' paper'.

The studio in the garden
Recent schools projects have included working with three primary schools taking children out onto allotments, looking at growing food, sustainability and developing arts projects from field research.(see schools page on website).
Karen has undertaken training with Creative Futures Cumbria for artists who work in schools, and is now acting as a mentor on their current round of training.
She is a member of the studio group, Green Door Studios, based in Kendal, and has exhibited widely in the north of England and Scotland.
